Description
“The inspiration for Turkana came from a spectacular view in northern Kenya. Turkana is a beautiful lake in the midst of a desert, and it’s much loved by birds.”
—Mari Martikainen and Minna Impiö, the designers of Mifuko
An Ecological Choice —
Crafted from PET material from recycled bottles, Turkana is a truly ecological choice. Using already existing materials such as recycled bottles uses up less resources and also saves water.
As a material PET is known to be strong and lightweight material that is 100% recyclable.
Mifuko —
Mifuko is a Fair Trade design company whose products, traditional Kiondo-baskets are handmade ethically in Kenya. Mifuko was founded by two designer-friends, Mari Martikainen and Minna Impiö with the idea of sustaining traditional handicraft skills. Today, they bring employment to 600 women in rural Kenya.

Soft and versatile —
Being made from recycled bottles aka plastic, the feel of Turkana is a little surprising: the rug is super soft, almost like it’s made from wool – a lovely feel under your toes.
Yet the material is 95 % PET, Turkana can be placed also on wet spaces and outdoors. You’ll only need to take care of there won’t stand still any excess water.
Mifuko’s Designs —
The rugs designed by the Finnish Fair Trade company Mifuko combine Finnish design and aesthethics to colors of Africa.
Besides Turkana, Mifuko has designed two kelim rugs for us: Mombasa and Nakuru.
