A RUG FOR EVERY KITCHEN AND DINING SPACE

Kitchens and dining areas place different demands on a rug than any other room. The rug needs to handle spills, chair movement, frequent foot traffic and regular cleaning, while still contributing to the feel and character of the space.

Finarte's flatwoven wool and recycled cotton rugs are well suited to both. Their flat, tightly woven surfaces are straightforward to clean, do not trap dirt in deep pile and hold their appearance well over time.

WHAT ARE THE BEST KITCHEN RUGS?

The best kitchen rugs combine easy care with a surface that stays flat underfoot. A flatwoven rug is the most practical choice for a kitchen, as it lies close to the floor, allows chairs and stools to move freely without catching and is simple to vacuum or spot clean.

Recycled cotton rag rugs are a particularly good kitchen rug option. They are lightweight, washable by hand and available in a wide range of colours and patterns. Wool kitchen rugs are slightly more substantial and naturally repel dirt, making them well suited to dining areas where foot traffic is regular but spills are less frequent.

For kitchens where a runner works better than a full rug, Finarte's runner collection includes designs in wool, recycled cotton and jute in a range of lengths to fit most kitchen layouts. Explore our kitchen runners and runners.

DINING ROOM RUGS AND RUGS UNDER THE DINING TABLE

A rug under the dining table is one of the most practical and visually effective ways to define a dining area, whether in a dedicated dining room or within an open-plan kitchen and living space. It protects the floor from chair legs, reduces noise and makes the space feel warmer and more finished.

For a dining room rug to work well, it needs to be large enough. The rug should extend at least 60 centimetres beyond the edge of the table on all sides so that the chair legs remain on the rug when pulled out. A rug that is too small causes chairs to catch and tip on the edge, which is both uncomfortable and wears the rug unevenly over time. When in doubt, choose the larger size. For detailed sizing guidance, read our article on how to choose a rug under the dining table.

WASHABLE AND EASY-CARE KITCHEN RUGS

Easy care is the most important practical consideration when choosing a kitchen rug. Finarte's recycled cotton rugs can be gently hand-washed at home, making them a practical choice for kitchens and dining areas where spills are part of daily life. Wool kitchen rugs are best maintained with regular vacuuming and spot cleaning, with professional cleaning for a deeper wash when needed.

For all kitchen and dining rugs on hard floors, an anti-slip underlay is recommended to keep the rug safely in place. Explore our care products.

ROUND RUGS FOR THE DINING TABLE

A round rug works particularly well under a round or square dining table, echoing the shape of the table and creating a naturally balanced arrangement. For a round dining table, the rug should extend at least 60 centimetres beyond the table's edge in every direction so that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out.

Finarte's round rugs are available in jute and wool, both of which are well suited to dining areas. Explore our round rugs.
